4 Tips for Incorporating Color into your Wardrobe
How to Incorporate Color into your Spring Wardrobe
As a midsize girl I know how intimidating incorporating color into your wardrobe can be. With a larger body comes messaging to hide and blend in and not take risks with your outfits. I used to live like that, always opting for neutrals and wearing outfits that make me appear smaller not bigger. Well, in 2024 I have finally decided to let that go and instead try out colorful outfits. This has looked like colorful accessories to start with and has evolved into bold dresses! To learn how to bring some color and life into your wardrobe, keep on reading.
Tip 1: Play With Colorful Accessories
There is something to be said about a bold and colorful accessory! My go to as of late has been this blue pair of blue light glasses, they are surprisingly comfortable and have made quite the statement! Anytime I wear them out I get compliments and have even confused some close friends because they are not used to me wearing glasses! Coming in a whole host of colors, these glasses are a great way to dip your toe into color and bring some life to your face. With a pair like these, I recommend wearing a cooler toned outfit like grey, blue or purple. If you want to get crazy, consider styling the glasses with something red for more contrast!
Another great way to incorporate a colorful accessory into an outfit is to play with the trendy trucker hats we are seeing everywhere. I found one I love from Etsy that has some reds and browns in it. Since it’s more of a subtle color you are still providing a statement to the outfit it just won’t be quite as bold.
Tip 2: Try a Singular Colorful Garment
Once you get comfortable with accessories, I recommend now adding a singular colorful garment to an outfit. I have become quite the fan of boxer shorts this spring, they are super comfortable and rather easy to style. My collection consists of a green pair and red pair and again both options lend themselves well to either a coordinated outfit in a warm or cool tone. When playing around with color, you will want to learn about the color wheel and how different shades lend themselves well to others. Black and grey go well with cool tones while browns and white go well with warm tones. For example, a great outfit might be some red boxer shorts with a white tee and white sandals. This works well because the red is the focal point and the white just brings out the lightness of the color!
Similarly, you could opt for a colorful top like a bold graphic tee or colorful blouse. I have rather enjoyed the tie front blouses we are seeing all over social media. These would be great with a black or white pant and a simple sneaker or heel. Again as you start to familiarize yourself with colors and tones it will make adding in colors that much easier.
Tip 3: Try a Monochromatic Look
My third tip has been a bit challenging even for me to bring into my personal style but I am so glad I have! I think there is something so fun about a monochromatic outfit whether it is activewear as seen above (which is honestly a fantastic motivator at the gym) or it’s an everyday outfit in that singular color. If you want to totally match, get garments in the same color and if it’s a set, opt for that. For something more visually interesting, consider a lighter shade on top and a darker shade on bottom. A light blue top for example would be perfect with a dark pair of jeans. Or you could opt for the opposite and do a light green pant with a dark green top. Either way the funkier you get with the look the more visually interesting it will be!
Tip 4: Utilize Prints to Bring in Multiple Colors
My final tip is to have fun with prints and wear something with multiple colors to get the biggest impact! This is considered dopamine dressing and it’s a great way to feel good in your garments. I wore this dress recently to a meeting I was a bit nervous for and I instantly felt far more prepared and confident because of the outfit. I also received a lot of compliments which made me smile even more!
I’ve got to say, wearing a lot of color is not for the faint of heart or those who want to blend into the background. Honestly loud proud prints like these are great for exposure therapy and learning how to express yourself through style. Life is meant to be expressed and felt and as I have learned to wear more color in my everyday life I have learned to also live out these values and ideals.
