How to Style Silk Hair Scarves 5 Ways

Hair Scarves for Summer

One of my new favorite trends of 2020 has been hair scarves! I bought my first one way back in 2018 when I was living in Italy. It had the cutest pink design and while I wish I still had it, a new love of silky scarves was born. Since the pink scarf of Europe, I purchased a cute orange design, a 6 pack of scarves, and a huge red one for the fourth! The obsession really took off during the quarantine because I started getting into fun hair styles and makeup for Zoom calls. If you’ve been meaning to try some fun hair styles, keep reading!

Top Knot Scarf

My first look is PERFECT for summer! While topknots can be a little boring, especially when paired with a simple top, a scarf can take the look to the next level.

To recreate this look, start with a high pony tail and a scrunchy. I feel like scrunchies are a great way to cheat some volume which is crucial for this look! Once you create the ponytail, twist and wrap your hair over the scrunchy and secure with a second elastic (I recommend a thinner elastic). After you created your bun, take a smaller hair scarf and fold it into a triangle diagonally. Then, continue folding the triangle at the base until you get a long strip of scarf. You’ll then take this strip and wrap it a few times around the bun until the entire base of the hair is covered. Finally, to secure the look, tie the ends of the strip and tuck them into the wrap!

Simple Headband

One of my favorite ways to wear a hair scarf is as a headband! As a baby, I only slept on one side, so my head is a little lopsided 😅This version of a headband is SO comfortable and doesn’t move around on my head like normal headbands do.

To create this look, all you need to do is make another long strip with the scarf like we did in the first look. I recommend starting with your hair in a low ponytail to eliminate any hairs from getting caught in the knot you will be making. Now, once you have the ponytail ready to go, take the center of the scarf and place it about an inch from your hairline. Wrap it over your head and take the two ends underneath the ponytail, tying a secure knot. Now you can either keep the ponytail like I did here, or let your hair down, which leads us to…

Elevated Headband

Although this headband is rather similar to the option above, I still had to share this alternative! I think this is a dressier version of the simple headband, so wear this when you’re going out or to work.

To make this headband, start the same way we did when we created the simple headband. Again, use a smaller scarf to avoid excess fabric on the top of your head. This time around, take the ends of the scarf strip and meet them at the top of your head while placing the middle of the scarf under the ponytail. Next, create a double, secure knot on the top of your head like I did above. I recommend then taking your hair out of the ponytail with this look and pull out some pieces in the front to complete!

Triangle Hair Scarf

This look was completely inspired by That 70s Show!! There is something so beautiful about vintage inspired hair. I am obsessed with the bohemian vibes of this look and if you are having a bad hair day, this is a great alternative to hats!

To create this look, start with the large triangle in your scarf. For all these looks, I use square scarves that I fold at least once diagonally. When creating this look, I used one fold that I place over my head. I recommend doing this in front of a mirror because this style can be a little challenging to get just right! Once the scarf is on properly, tie a knot or two at the nape of your neck. This look is best done with your hair down with some texture, like I did with the waves. You can also get fancy and take some face framing hairs out to complete the look!

Ponytail Hair Scarf

This look is 100% inspired by the Fourth of July so buckle in! I’ve been noticing a lot of big scarves floating around and I had to jump on the bandwagon. I think this look is so fun and jazzes up a plain outfit!

To create the final look, start off with a high ponytail. I recommend using a scrunchy or an elastic in your hair color to secure your hair. Next, take your scarf and create a long strip of fabric, as seen above. With your strip, just loop your scarf once or twice over the elastic and you’re done! When creating this look, I recommend using a scarf longer than your hair length to create some contrast.

Silk Hair Scarf Takeaways

When wearing fun hair scarves as seen above, be sure to pair them with more simplistic outfits. I think the main appeal to these looks is the elevation they bring to summer hair and makeup. When shopping for the scarves, be sure to invest in a decent sized square so you are able to do a lot with the look. Definitely go for prints and colors that blend into your wardrobe and have fun with them!! If you try any of these styles, please tag me on Instagram so I can see 😍
