4 Easy Ways to Start as a Fashion Influencer
How to Become a Fashion Influencer
Each week on my Instagram page, I share my Monday Marketing tips. Began this about 2 years ago now and people have been eating them up! Recently I was asked how to start as a fashion influencer and I adored this question. Having started in 2019, I felt like I was so behind in the game but I was right on time for me. Now almost 3 years later, it was the best decision I’ve ever made.
Influencer Background
Before I fill you in on my tips, I wanted to provide you with my background on WHY I started my page. At the time, I had just finished my junior year at Gonzaga and was always getting asked by my friends how to style certain items in their wardrobes. For years I was a Nordstrom sales girl and was used to styling people. I started to wonder, hmm should I keep the outfits in one place? And as it happened, I was out at a local bar with a friend from high school telling her of my crazy idea to start a fashion Instagram account and she said why wouldn’t I?? Right then and there I started my account and the rest is history.
Create a Separate Account
One of my biggest tips for starting an account is to start from scratch. Oddly enough for me, it was easier to sell myself to strangers and start somewhere small with my closest friends before sharing my work with acquaintances. To kick things off, I followed my closest circle and posted the page to my private account. Having a separate starting point also helped me in that I didn’t have to archive or change another page to suit what I was doing now. Also when coming up with a name, honestly just use your own. I went back and forth for so long and settling on my name allowed me to establish a great personal brand.
Post Daily (if you can)
For the first few years online, I posted every single day! Nowadays you don’t need to be this consistent but by showing up for my audience as often as possible, I was really able to foster a community and provide a ton of content. Usually I would spend a whole day shooting a ton of outfits for my page and uploading them throughout the week. This gave me ample content to work with and I would plan out my pictures/captions on a Google sheet ahead of time to make uploading even easier. While yes there is a bit of prep work at first, this bit of effort will really help you in the long run!
Reach out to People Daily
As you begin on your creator journey, remember the key is to be social. Reach out to potential followers every day that post similar content and make genuine relationships. My rule of thumb is 6/1/1. Leave six likes, one meaningful comment and a follow (if you like their work!). Personally I do this more on smaller pages so you can both help each other grow and develop as creators. Also focus on engaging with people physically nearby you so you can meet up and work together. By fostering community, you are more likely to get brand deals down the road.
Just Start Posting
Honestly my best piece of advice is to just start posting in general. By sharing a little something every day, you’ll grow more familiar and comfortable with the process and you’ll learn so much along the way. With nearly 3 years under my belt, I feel like I’m still learning a lot and I’m growing as a creator every day. We all have to start somewhere but if you’re passionate about what you do, this decision will change your life for the better.
