Why Avoiding a Niche Increases Social Media Sales

Why You Don’t Need a Niche

Ah yes, social media in 2022. A unique land filled with photos, videos and any content you can imagine. It’s also a multi-billion dollar industry, filled with a ton of opportunities for influencers/creators alone. In this post, I am coming from the perspective of a full time content creator who has worked in this industry for almost 3 years! In that time I have focused on both a niche and a lack thereof. I believe the latter is my recipe for success and I think it will be yours too!

From Fashion Blogger to Lifestyle Creative

Working on the blog and Instagram!

Back when I started on social media, I began with a separate Instagram account devoted to my daily outfit ideas. No joke, I posted every single day a new outfit for my audience! Fashion has always been a huge passion of mine and to this day, I still post predominantly fashion related content. Even for the last few months, I just stuck to fashion posts and videos and tried to niche myself down to solely fashion content but I was ultimately doing a disservice to myself.

The Lightbulb Moment

My lightbulb moment came in twofold. First, I was speaking to a class a few months back and some kids were confused that I said I was a fashion blogger but worked with makeup brands and food chains. I started to think perhaps my strategy was all wrong! Why am I advertising myself as something I am not? My second revelation came even more recently when my good friend Torri of @torrisunshine informed me that I was going about my content all wrong. She said to stand out to brands, I needed to showcase more campaign friendly content and that was the day my strategy totally changed.

I am a Content Creator

She is a business woman AND she travels!

After that conversation, I knew I had to revamp my content for both Instagram and TikTok. Now, I have expanded my Instagram to feature more lifestyle content whether that’s coffee shop pictures, travel recommendations, or even makeup and hair posts! I am doing something similar on TikTok, really allowing myself to share whatever is on my mind at that moment. Although I remain sharing clothes and some outfit posts, I am not just focused on my midsize outfits. Instead people can come to my page for so much more and get to understand the various facets of me!

Sales Translation

As I shift away from my old content strategy, I have welcomed in so many more content opportunities. I have received several gifted products and I now have secured several brand deals for myself! I now need to maintain this higher, true to myself content to continue showing brands that I am someone worth working with. The key here is to view your platforms as your digital portfolio and put your best foot forward. Truth be told, I’m still working on producing the best content possible but we all need to start somewhere and remember why we are doing what we do!

Until next time,

Lauren
