How to Scout for Photoshoot Locations in the Summer
Why Location Scouting
For any blogger or content creator, deciding where to take pictures can be a daunting task. It is important to shoot somewhere that correlates with your aesthetic while also being accessible to your location. Another key is finding somewhere that is weather appropriate and leads to amazing images! Now, with the present restrictions on some travel and locations, choosing a photoshoot spot can be difficult! Fortunately, I have come up with some tips and tricks to get great locations that will elevate any feed!
Drive Around Your Hometown
Throughout the shelter in place, I have become rather accustomed to an evening drive around town. This has lead to some incredible location discoveries because I end up in locations I don’t normally visit! Take for example the parking lot above. I never would have thought to take pictures here but the urban vibes of the building totally make this picture feel like I’m downtown somewhere. When you drive around and allow for some exploration, you can end up finding some hidden gems!
PRO TIP:
When driving around for spots, be sure to keep a list going on your phone. I have a whole notepad filled with locations in my hometown that I want to shoot at. This also can help me decide which places will work best at certain times of year as well as which outfits would go well in the area.
Look for Light

I am obsessed with this picture!! I found a location where the sun was going down yet was facing me and adding a fun glow to the image. When using natural light, make sure to shoot outside in either the evening or morning. Another benefit to this location is the mix of nature and industry. I am a big fan of contrast in my photos and this picture does just that. I like how the lake is in the background while the bridge is supporting me and the foreground. Remember, photography is as much the composition as it is the subject.
Head to a Park
In the summer especially, I love taking pictures at parks. The greenery is a fun contrast to my typically neutral outfits and it’s honestly a great way to get outside. Plus, I recommend big fields or trails when shooting in parks. I love this particular image because you get all the trees and grass along with the focus on my outfit. Oh, and it’s a great way to social distance 😍
Go to a Garden Center
Again, the summer is a great time to shoot outside, especially with flowers. I personally love a good shoot at a garden center when the weather is good! For example, I found a garden specialty store in my hometown for this picture. If you don’t have a stand alone garden or greenhouse, head to a Walmart or Home Depot for the same effect. Not only are the flowers a gorgeous addition to the picture, but they can also double as a great prop! The best locations double as a background and focal point.
Visit a Restaurant or Bar
Some of the best locations you can find are food related! I personally love a little restaurant or bar, you get both the prop of the food and you can easily share an outfit at the same time! If you want to share a full outfit, I recommend shooting outside the restaurant so you are standing up. If you want to share jewelry or makeup, taking pictures indoors is the better choice!
Go Forth and Shoot
At the end of the day, the most important thing to remember when scouting for photo locations is feeling comfortable in what you are doing.
