4 Tips to Find your Personal Style in 2025
How to Discover your Personal Style
Looking to discover your personal style in 2025? I know I am! I began this journey many moons ago as a saleswoman at Nordstrom from 2017-2021. In that role I learned how to style other women while also learning how to style myself and incorporate multiple pieces of clothing into one unique look. As I grew older and more confident in myself the past year or so, I noticed my style getting a facelift and becoming far more interesting than it ever was before! Before I was someone that liked a dressy casual look but now I am drawn to bold colors instead of a beige version of that style. To learn how I got to this point, keep reading!
Step 1: Embrace your Lifestyle
So tea, I am a recently single woman in her late 20s and I am definitely back on my partying grind. I find myself oftentimes out at events and running around to various activities through the week. Since I also live alone during this stage of my life I find myself wanting to be outside of the house more than I want to be in. Because of this way of living, I am always in need of outfits that are multifunctional and I want looks that take me from morning until night with minimal changes. This has meant a lot of statement outerwear, basic denim and fun tops I can wear to work and a bar.
Alongside my change in social life that includes dressing a little bit sexier than I was, I also just took a job as a sales manager and social media manager. With that role I will be customer facing and in need of appropriate workwear. I will say in this job I am taking over the role as “creative marketing girly” where I get to wear zany outfits that reflect my personality. By understanding the parameters of my young professional lifestyle, it’s easier now to shop and curate outfits that echo my day to day life. It wouldn’t make sense for me to dress in workout clothes all the time in my role nor would it make sense to dress like I lived in California when I’m based in Washington State.
Pro Tip: One of my favorite stylists Kenzie on TikTok has a great rule for her clients; go on Pinterest and instead of making a board that just focuses on dream outfits, add in food/decor/beauty etc to give a holistic view of who you are as a person. This helps provide a macro view of your style and makes it easier to shop in general!
Step 2: Document your Current Outfits
Something I have done for YEARS now as a fashion creator but more-so recently in an intentional way has been documenting my everyday outfits whether that is in video form or in pictures. Nothing will beat an outfit mirror selfie in my opinion and it’s a great way to watch your fashion evolution over a period of time. I am so glad I have done this because I can see what shapes/colors/textures I have been drawn to over the years and it’s fun to watch your style change as you grow up. In my case, it’s extra fun now because I can see what I’m loving and which pieces I have heavy in my rotation. Lately it’s been voluminous pants which I never used to wear and oversized sweaters which I have loved since I was in high school.
Similarly this works for accessories and how you put an outfit together. I have always been someone that is proud of her legs and bum so I try to create outfits highlighting those features. I also like gold jewelry and sunglasses which has now evolved into a statement pair of blue light glasses. These little tweaks and adjustments make for interesting outfits and the more I wear them, the more they say “Lauren”! I also love a fun hat that showcases my personality. Ever since I cut my hair I have enjoyed doing more with a trucker hat that has a fun saying. While this used to only be reserved for graphic tees in my life, it’s nice to again watch it evolve into something else.
Step 3: Organize/Clean your Closet & Take Inventory
One of the best things I ever did for myself was organize my closet in a way that I can see what I have and I make sure to clean it out every few months to keep it functional. As a fashion creator, my closet is crazier than most and I try to make it as aligned as possible with my lifestyle. By organizing in a way that I can see everything and it’s categorized by product, I feel like I get to go shopping every morning which is such a treat. When cleaning your closet, also keep inventory of sorts to see what you like to wear the most and what may be lacking from your current closet. This has been a game changer for me because I personally noticed I had a ton of basics and casual pieces but not a lot of statement items that reflected who I am as a creative.
To combat this, I started a “to be acquired” list on my phone that has helped me tremendously when shopping. I make sure to go through and write everything I may want to elevate my wardrobe so I’m not impulse buying garments. Lately this has looked like some statement pieces that I know I will wear and rewear for different occasions. I also like to add in accessories to this list so I can get a cool full outfit instead of just tops and bottoms.
Step 4: Allow yourself to have FUN with Fashion
My last and probably biggest tip is to have fun with fashion and allow yourself to experiment! For so long I caged myself in as a fashion girly by wearing what I thought I should wear for my body type and listening to the fashion rules we were taught in the early 2000s. I was so rigid for so long and that hindered me as a fashionista and young woman. I also fell victim in my younger years to dressing like my friends and I was afraid to dress in a way that showed who I was as a person and what my personality is actually like. Truth be told, I’m a loud and bubbly person but for so long I just wore black and hid that side of me from the outside world. Now, I have embraced dopamine dressing and colors which has helped my confidence immensely.
Pro Tip: while on this journey, consider websites like Nuuly to help you out. I started using the clothing rental site a few months ago and it’s been a game changer. For $98 a month, you can rent 6 items from stores like Anthropologie and Free People (some of my faves already) and if you want to keep anything permanently you can for a discount from retail price! If you’re a shopaholic like me or just looking to experiment with style, this is a genius concept!
